This year’s AMA RC Pylon NatsNews author Ola Nordell and his assistant, Leo Nordell.
Welcome back to Muncie, Indiana. People have taken the time to make the annual trek for the Outdoor AMA Nats. The numbers for our events are up from previous years, and, in fact, it looks like we have hit the 82 mark for AMA 426 (Q500).
Today we started the first day of 426. The plan is to fly six rounds of qualifying.
The qualifying/finals format presents different strategies for competing, and many are just trying to make the finals. It proves to be fun and engaging for all. The two final rounds of qualifying will be flown on Wednesday morning.
Electric Formula 1 (EF1) was flown today. We had 44 registered pilots in this class. The planes are replicas of full-scale F1 racers. This is a spec class run on 4S LiPos and an 8 X 8E APC propeller. This electric class is our only electric event and, just as with 424, we run both a Novice and Expert division.
Today was the day that we celebrated our past. In conjunction with the 100-year celebration by the AMA, the Pylon community invited all pilots to bring out some old models to display and fly.
The racing was very tight today and several Novices moved up to Expert. From the beginning, it was pretty clear that the boys from Canada were going to be tough to beat. After eight rounds of racing, the team of Roy Andrassy and Cory Paine from Canada cruised into first place and fastest time!
