June 24, 2021: Control Line Racing

Two events were run Wednesday, Texas Quickie Rat (TQR) and Dallas Sport Goodyear.

TQR had a decent turnout with eight entries. Motors were all K&B 4011s or 8011s—long out of production but easily found on auction sites. Top finishers had close races, and there was an unusual number of mechanical problems with others. The final race winner was Chuck Barnes Jr.

June 24, 2021: Control Line Navy Carrier Ends

Wednesday, June 23, was Class I and II Carrier in both the internal combustion glow motors and electric-powered planes. The difference between the events that were flown on Tuesday and those on Wednesday is that the planes flown on Tuesday used profile fuselages that only have to resemble an actual plane that made a takeoff and arrested landing on a carrier ship or is designated as a carrier-based plane. The classes of Carrier flown on Wednesday have built-up fuselages and must be within plus or minus 5% of the actual scale outline.

June 21, 2021: Control Line Precision Aerobatics

The Control Line Beginner Stunt at the Nats was held Sunday, June 20.  I would like to thank the volunteers who made this possible. Mark Overmeir, Wes Eakin, and Eric Taylor judged while Kenny Stevens and Dale Josephson critiqued the fliers.  Most importantly, Beth and James Mills ran admission and tabulation, while Ben acted as a runner.  David Ebers volunteered to handle the weigh in, pictures, and pull test.  This made my job easy. 

June 23, 2021: Control Line Combat

Tuesday, the Control Line Combat at the Nats 2021 finished four days of F2D Combat.  Since the Team Trials were canceled late in planning, Saturday and Sunday became kind of the ”Non-Team Trials.” Contestants came from all over the US, Mexico, Russia, and the Ukraine.   

Monday and Tuesday were the Official AMA F2D Combat event.  There were 25 contestants, including two Junior/Senior, Austin Minor and Alex Dementiev. There was some really great flying, despite the heavy wind on Monday, which reached 23 mph. 

June 23, 2021: Control Line Precision Aerobatics

Tuesday started off way better than the previous days, weather wise. Contestants were greeted with mid-50° temperatures and only a slight wind. It was much better than previous days.

June 23, 2021: RC Combat Ends

The first two days of RC Combat went by fast. We were able to get all of the classes finished early and all that was left to fly was E-1000.

E-1000 is a class still being tested out by the RCCA. A proposal has been submitted to add it to the AMA Rulebook as the current rules are working well. E-1000 is an all-electric class with a maximum battery size of a three-cell 1,000 mAh battery. The entire design is left open because the battery size limits the performance of the plane.

June 23, 2021: RC Pylon Racing

Tuesday started off a little chilly, with temperatures in the low 50s. The good news was that there was little wind and that made from great racing conditions.

Event 426 is a one-engine class that uses the Dub Jett Super Sport .40.  All of the engines are very close in performance. As a result, this class has very tight heats in almost every race. We completed six of the eight qualifying rounds. The top 22 will make it, along with two “wild cards.”

June 23, 2021: Control Line Navy Carrier

In 2020, attendance was down in the CL Navy Carrier events due to COVID-19. Some of those who didn’t attend last year came this year, but are numbers were still down from where they have been in the recent past. This meant that the contestants not only had to help each other, they were called upon to help with some of the official duties.
