Paul Smith releases Bob Hawk’s Nostalgia Profile model.
By Melvin Schuette
Thursday was the third and final day for the Control Line (CL) Navy Carrier events at the 2024 AMA Nats. Today was a little disappointing. Even though we had people who had entered the unofficial events, a number of them, for one reason or another, chose not to compete. In a couple of cases, the entrant only managed an attempt and did not receive a score, so they were not eligible for a trophy.
The wind was lighter than the last two days, though it was still strong enough to affect the low-speed portion of the flights.
No contest, including the AMA Nats, could work without people volunteering to be officials. Susan Perry spent all day on Thursday timing. Mrs. Hawk took her husband, Bob Hawk’s, place as a timer when he decided to fly. The Hawks have already stated their plan on coming back to the AMA Nats next year. Contestants sometimes volunteered to officiate when not flying, while others center judged. The contestants found a way to make it work.
This year was the first time that I know of that we had two people tie for first place in an event. Angstrom Eberenz and Paul Smith both scored 214.8 points in Skyray Carrier. Since your placement in the event is determined by your highest single score, it is officially a tie for first place. Trophies are not given in Skyray Carrier. First place is given a Skyray kit, and second place receives a gallon of fuel. It was determined that the kit would be given to Angstrom, and the fuel was given to Paul.

We will all leave this year’s AMA Nats with plans for what we want to build before next year’s competition.
Till next year.
