Paul Smith’s Profile airplane, which was used in Class II Carrier.
By Melvin Schuette
Wednesday, August 7, was Scale Carrier day. There were four classes of Control Line (CL) Navy Carrier flown. Class I and Class II use both internal combustion-powered models and electric-powered models.
Class I internal combustion-powered models can use any internal combustion motor up to .40 cubic inches. Class II internal combustion-powered models use a motor up to .401 to .65 cubic inches.
Class I electric-powered models can use any motor battery combination, as long as the airplane with the battery weighs less than 3.5 pounds. Class II electric-powered models must weigh more than 3.5 pounds but less than 4.5 pounds.
Even though Class I and Class II events are considered Scale events, you can still use a Profile model in the event. If this is done, you just do not receive the Scale bonus points.
The winds had shifted 180° since Tuesday, requiring the relocation of the carrier deck. A big thank-you goes out to the maintenance crew for their help with moving the deck. The winds had a large effect on the models in both the high- and low-speed flights.
As it turns out, all four of Angstrom Eberenz’s top scores over the last two days turned out to be new Junior-aged modeler records. Congratulations, Angstrom.
Thursday is Unofficial Carrier day. 15 Profile Carrier, Skyray Carrier, and Nostalgia Carrier will be flown.
Current scores and placings for the completed events can be found below.
