Approximately 100 people, RC and Control Line (CL) combined, attended the Saturday night banquet. The program for the evening began with an auction of several donated items. The items included a set of plans, a Pica T-28 kit and retracts, a bottle of bourbon, and a bottle of wine. The auction netted a total of nearly $500 to be donated to NASA’s FAI team sponsorship.
The following received awards for high static scores in the following classes:
· Sportsman Sport Scale: Brian Taylor—Spacewalker
· Expert Sport Scale: Jeremy Arvin—Fokker D.VII
· Designer Scale: Keith Numbers—RAF RAF F.E.8
· Open Scale: Dave Marenberg—Chipmunk
· Team Scale: Will Berninger/Mike Barbee—T-34C
Inducted into the NASA/AMA Hall of Fame:
· Grant Hiestand: Control Line—present to receive the award
· Ed Terry: Radio Control—deceased
· Harris Lee: Radio Control—deceased
The 2023 Bob Lirette Award was awarded to John Boyko.
Sunday morning started off a little cool, but again with clear skies and just a slight breeze. The FAI flew first. The fourth and final round finished up around 12:30 p.m. As the scorekeepers finalized scores, AMA set up the first, second, and third place podiums for FAI, both RC and CL.
For more than a year, NASA has been working toward assembling a 2024 United States team for international competition in Romania. The tryouts for the team were held simultaneously with the AMA Nats this year. F4H is the RC class that is judged more in line with AMA Sport Scale rules. Static judging is from a distance and the weight limit is 33 pounds. Flight scoring is different from AMA scoring, as maneuvers include K factors that multiply the score depending on difficulty. Whereas an Expert Sport Scale is based on a total possible of 200 points, FAI is out of 1500. The top three in the tryouts are eligible for the team. Should one of them not be able to participate, the fourth-place finisher can serve as an alternate.

THANK YOU to everyone that made the 100th anniversary of the NATS a special event. Thank you to AMA and all the sponsors, event CD's, contestants and volunteers because without you we could not enjoy the hobby we love. With the passion that still exists for model aviation competition after 100 years I am sure 100 years from now there will be a celebration for the 200th anniversary. Congratulations to all!
