The second day of Control Line (CL) Speed had the threat of rain, but everyone still got their flights in. They even flew through lunchtime, just in case. We flew Formula 40, 21 Sport Speed, 21 Profile Proto, and Fox 35 Speed.
Formula 40 is a standing-start event, flown with a .40-size motor. It consists of flying 14 laps on 60-foot lines for a distance of 1 mile, and the airplanes really accelerate up to speed very quickly. Chris Montagino won first place with a speed of 160.52 mph. James VanSant took second place with a speed of 154.31 mph, and Glen VanSant came in third place at 152.34 mph. A total of four people entered this event.
There were five entries in 21 Sport Speed. This event uses a .21-size motor and is timed for seven laps on 60-foot lines for a distance of half a mile. First place was taken by Chris with a very good speed of 149.25 mph. Glen took second place at 140.11 mph, and Carl Dodge came in third place at 126.32 mph.
There were only two entries for 21 Profile Proto, and Glen placed first with a good speed of 116.04 mph. Dave Rigotti took second place with a speed of 101.48 mph. This event is a standing-start event flown on 60-foot lines using a .21-size motor.
Fox 35 Speed had seven total entries. This event is flown from a standing start for 14 laps. The only motor that you can use for this is a Fox 35 Stunt motor. The airplane can be anything that can handle the motor. This event got started only 10 years ago as a way of getting more people interested in flying Speed. It seems to be catching on, as it is now flown all around the country. Henry Nelson came in first place, going 104.02 mph. Carl took second place at 100.13 mph. Dave came in third place at 98.02 mph.
Like Perky Speed, we try to fly the average speed flown in Fox 35 Speed, and that is the prize that you want to win. Glen won Best Average with a speed of 90.55 mph. He came within 0.32 mph of the average speed, which was 90.87 mph. That’s close! I don’t think Duke Fox could ever imagine a Fox 35 Stunt motor going over 12,000 rpm and going as fast as everyone is going using only 5% nitro!
A note: We had a new flier that showed up to fly Fox 35 Speed. He is a Senior named Augstman Ebecienz (sorry if I misspelled that). He came in last place but flew Speed for the first time. Welcome! Keep going, come back next year, and go faster!
Tomorrow, we will be flying A Speed, B Speed, and Sport Jet. Time to make some noise!!!
