CL Scale

When you fly in Round #4 to improve your overall score that is a decision each pilot has to make. You might be far enough behind that even a perfect flight score would not help. Or, you might be less than one point behind.

When it comes to the Nats, you always want to be prepared for severe weather. The weather on Saturday, July 11, was no exception. We had almost completed round 2 of flying when a large thunderstorm came through the area and dumped a large amount of rain. Everything was soaked.

We got a slow start this morning with the static judging, but eventually got all of the models judged. The Sport, Profile, Team, 1/2A, and Authentic scale classes were done the same way we have done it in the past, where the judges were given a binder with information about the full-size aircraft that was copied.

The storms moved out and we had great flying weather to finish up the AMA events and fly Round 1 of the F4B team trials.

The summer weather in Muncie can unflyable due to high wind, and the weather on July 12th was one example. The pilots decided not to fly due to the high-wind conditions. So, the decision was made to return to the flying site on Sunday morning to finish off round 1 for the AMA events.

All of the AMA events were static judged today, and then we started flying round 1 of the four possible flights. However, the winds started to pick up when we started, which made flying more difficult than normal. Fun, Sport, and Profile classes were flown, but we were unable to fly the 1/2A, Team, or Authentic events.

The F4B Control Line Scale World Championships happens every even year, and the team trials happen the year before the World Championships happen.

There are multiple Control Line (CL) events at the Nationals. They all share a bellcrank to control the elevator and fly in a circular pattern. But each CL event is very different in its purpose. The goal in a CL Scale event is to build a smaller version of a full-size aircraft in appearance and flight qualities.

Since we finished Round 1 on Friday, July 12, there were three rounds left to fly. The remaining flights were flown on Saturday, July 13, allowing the Control Line (CL) Scale portion to come to a close on Saturday afternoon.

The weather once again played a role in the scheduling for the flying portion of the 2024 AMA Control Line (CL) Scale Nats. Each pilot can fly a total of four times to determine their overall score.
