On day three of the Control Line (CL) Speed Nats, we flew A Speed, B Speed, and Sport Jet. A Speed is flown on 65-foot lines using a .15-size motor. There are six laps that are timed for speed. Chris Montagino took first place with a fast speed of 185.61 mph. I told you yesterday that things were going to go faster! Glen VanSant came very close behind in second place with a speed of 183.23 mph. James VanSant took third place with a speed of 174.08 mph.
The next event was B Speed. This event is flown using a .29-size motor on 70-foot lines, and it is timed for six laps. There were four entries total for this event. Chris again came in first place with a speed of 170.29 mph. James came in second with a speed of 163.87 mph, and Patrick Hemple took third with 144.82 mph.
Now for the noisy event—Sport Jet. There were 11 entries total, and there were 26 attempts for 18 official flights. They sure made a lot of noise! First place was taken by Brandon Robinson, of New Zealand, with a speed of 148.13 mph. Second place was won by David Fisher with a speed of 147.02 mph, and Steve Perkins took third place with 146.93 mph. Speeds from first place to third place were only separated by 1.2 mph. That’s close! Brandon is here in Muncie to compete in the World Cup and World Championships’ F2C Team Race event, and he is on the team representing New Zealand.
On Wednesday, August 7, we will be flying C Speed, D Speed, and Fast Jet. I told you that they are going to be going fast and making a lot of noise!!! So, come over to Site 2 and watch some fast speeds!
A special note: In my report on Tuesday, I told you about a new Speed flier that we had who showed up to fly Fox 35 Speed. I may have misspelled his name, and I wanted to make sure that I got it right. His name is Angstrom Eberenz, and he came here with his family from Smithfield, Pennsylvania.
He is 14 years old, is homeschooled, and is going into what will be ninth grade. He is entered in five classes of CL Navy Carrier, and he flew in Intermediate Stunt and won first place in his age category. He also flew in Fox 35 Speed for the first time. He has been flying for only the past six years, so he has come a long way in a short period of time. He and his family live only 3 minutes away from the Brodak field. They found out about a contest there, and now his whole family is interested in CL flying. Even his mom and sister are learning to fly, along with his dad. It’s good to see the whole family taking interest in a fun hobby. Welcome to the world of model aviation. We will be looking forward to seeing more from this family.
