The first day of the 2024 AMA Control Line (CL) Speed Nats is over. Speed was busy with 51 total attempts and 31 official flights. We flew Perky Speed, 1/2A Speed, and 1/2A Proto Speed.
We had a total of 15 entries in Perky, and the speeds ranged from 57.94 mph to 112.33 mph. That’s a wide gap of speed. Glen VanSant got first place, with a really fast speed of 112.33 mph. Henry Nelson went 107.55 mph for second place, and Bob Whitney came in third at 104.21 mph. Those are fast times!
Dave Rigotti came in with the best average speed at 91.18 mph. He came closest to the average speed of 93.2 mph. He was happy. Bill Hughes of B&L Hobbies supplied the medals to the three places, in addition to an OPS.15 for the best average speed. Thanks, Bill.
In 1/2A Speed, there were a total of four entries. The weather made it difficult to get those little motors to run decently. James VanSant was able to beat his dad by going 100.16 mph, winning first place. Glen came in second place with a speed of 89.54 mph.
In 1/2A Proto, there were seven entries. Patrick Hemple won first place with a speed of 96.2 mph. James went 93.88 mph to achieve second place. Glen got third place with a speed of 93.52 mph. The range of speeds from first to sixth place was only 5.65 mph. That’s close, so you can see that every little bit of speed goes a long way in this event.
Tomorrow, we will be flying Formula 40, 21 Profile Proto, 21 Sport Speed, and Fox 35 Speed. Things will be going a lot faster, so make a point to come to Site 2 and watch some fast airplanes.
